Complementary therapy

A gentle touch

Our complementary therapists are here for all of the patients who use our Living Well Services, including carers and other family members. When patients are referred to us by their key worker, we talk through their needs and together select the most suitable therapy for them. These therapies all involve gentle touch. They support the natural healing processes of the body and complement medical treatments.

We offer a course of six sessions lasting about an hour each.

How we can help

"I've received advice on condition management through
non-medication methods. This has been very effective. Very emotionally beneficial too..."

Our therapists can:

  • help with symptoms
  • relieve unwanted side effects of treatments
  • reduce anxiety levels and the effects of stress
  • restore energy levels
  • support physical and emotional well being.

Our therapists, unlike many working in this field, are specialists in tailoring their care to meet the needs of patients with cancer and other diseases.

Complementary therapy

Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of aromatic plant extracts and essential oils. They can be used as part of a massage or given to our clients to inhale. Essential oils can have a helpful effect on both mood and physical symptoms.

"A valuable therapeutic time that has helped me to cope better physically and emotionally."

Massage involves gently pressing, stroking or kneading the muscles and soft tissues. This helps to soften and relax the body and calm the mind.  Some patients like a full body massage and it suits others for us to focus the therapy in one area, such as on the hands or feet. Depending on the massage chosen, patients may be asked to remove some of their clothes during treatment.

Reflexology and hypno-reflexology

Reflexology is based on the belief that certain zones in the hands and feet are linked with different parts of the body. The therapist applies pressure to these zones with their thumb and fingers. This relieves tension in different parts of the body and renews the flow of energy.

With hypno-reflexology, we also use trance and visualization to help our clients to relax even more.

"A relaxing treat, which also supports my treatment."

Reiki is an ancient form of spiritual healing which comes from Japan. It involves the patient lying or sitting (fully clothed) while the therapist places their hands on or a few inches above the body, in areas where it feels most needed. Reiki is a gentle and natural therapy which can give symptom relief and help our patients to feel calm and relaxed.
