Our hospice shops

We have six shops located across North Derbyshire in: Bakewell, Buxton, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Matlock, New Mills and Whaley Bridge. We also have an online eBay store.

Shopping with us helps us to raise vital funds for the hospice, enabling us to provide tailored care to local patients and their loved ones.

Please note that the opening times set out below are subject to change based on our dedicated volunteers’ availability. We apologise in advance if timings change at short notice.

All of our shops accept cash and card payments.

Donating to our shops

We’re incredibly grateful for every donation we receive. Did you know that only 28% of Blythe House Hospice’s running costs come from the NHS? The rest is raised through our charity shops, donations and fundraising events.

Donations can be made at any of the hospice’s six shops during opening hours, and for larger quantities or higher-value items, we also have dedicated donation drop off points (see below), helping ensure valuable goods can be assessed and sold efficiently to maximise their impact.

Every clean, undamaged and sale-ready donation has the power to make a real difference. From clothing and homeware to books and toys, items sold in Blythe House Hospice shops support hospice care at home and in the community.

When items are damaged, soiled or incomplete, we must pay to dispose of them – costing the charity thousands of pounds each year that could otherwise be spent on patient care. If you’re unsure whether something is suitable to donate, our shop teams are always happy to help.

When you’re thinking of donating, please consider:

By donating well, you can really help to protect the environment, reduce disposal costs and ensure the most amount of money goes directly towards local hospice services.

Ashford donation drop off 1 of 3 - July 2022

Ashford in the Water donation drop off

Come along from 12.45pm to 3.15pm on the last Wednesday of every month to donate your pre-loved goods at our donation drop off at Ashford War Memorial Institute, Greaves Lane, Ashford in the Water, DE45 1QB.

St Matthew’s Church

You can also drop kind donations from 10am to 12 noon every Tuesday at St Matthew’s Church, Hayfield, SK22 2JE.

Bridgemont Donation Point

You can also donate items at our Bridgemont Donation Point. The address is: Unit F, Ringstones Industrial Estate, Bridgemont, SK23 7PD.

Furniture

We kindly ask, to help us make the most of your generosity, please:

Only donate during shop opening hours. Items left outside doorways can be damaged by bad weather and sadly can’t be sold, which means additional disposal costs for the hospice.
Don’t cram lots of heavy items together – bags and boxes of donations should not exceed 6kg in weight to ensure the safety of our staff and volunteers when lifting them.
Wrap all potentially breakable items well to avoid damage.
Let us know when you donate items if you’re a UK Taxpayer, so that we can claim an extra 25p per £1 from HMRC on the price we sell them for – helping us to raise even more money for local hospice care.

What items can you recycle?

We are committed to recycling responsibly and minimising waste. We work with CTR Group, a specialist recycling provider which is closely regulated by the Environment Agency, to ensure that donated items which cannot be re-sold are processed ethically and with care for the environment. We can recycle:

Can you claim Gift Aid on my donated items?

If you’re a UK taxpayer we can apply for Gift Aid on your donated items meaning that we can claim an extra 25p per £1 from HMRC on the amount we sell them for. To Gift Aid your donations, please speak to one of our team in the shop at the time of dropping off your donations, or call us on 01298 875 089.

Are your shops accessible for people with disabilities?

Our hospice building in Chapel-en-le-Frith is accessible to wheelchairs and includes small items and trinkets to buy, to help raise vital hospice funds. Our Bakewell, Chapel-en-le-Frith and Matlock shops, and the ground floor of our Whaley Bridge department store are all accessible to those in wheelchairs, and inside there are supportive aids too. Our shops in Buxton and New Mills are unfortunately not accessible for people who are dependent on wheelchairs due to steps outside, but people who can transfer can be assisted by handrails when inside. Staff and volunteers at all our shops are on hand to offer assistance if there’s a particular item they can look for on your behalf. We also have larger, well-defined signage for those with a vision impairment.

Above all, people with any disability including non-visible ones or those with learning disabilities, can rest assured that there will always be a warm welcome from our retail staff and volunteers, who will be able to provide assistance and support as necessary. Our shops provide a safe place for anyone who is feeling scared or uneasy when out and about across the community – please just bob in and a member of our team will be able to assist by calling a loved one, or ensuring that you feel comfortable enough to continue on your journey.
