Remembering Nick Pilling
Former Chairman of the Board of Trustees
We are deeply saddened to share the news that Nick Pilling, former Trustee and Chairman of the Blythe House Hospice Board of Trustees, has died.
Nick was a Mechanical Engineer and began his career at ICI and then latterly Buxton Lime, holding serval management positions including that of Managing Director. He was very highly respected within the quarrying industry both locally and nationally, serving as Chairman of the Council of the Institute of Quarrying. He was made a Fellow of the Institute in recognition of his outstanding service to the industry. He also served on the board of Stockport and High Peak Training and Enterprise Council.
He first became involved with Blythe House Hospice in 2001 and became Chairman in 2002, a position he held for seven years. He remained on the board as a Trustee, serving on both the Finance and Retail Subcommittees until 2015.
A kind, genuine and compassionate man, Nick made an outstanding contribution to the hospice during his time as Chairman and continued to support us long after his tenure. He remained a passionate advocate for our work, regularly attending events and donating generously to help ensure the continuation of local hospice care.
During his time as Chairman, Nick oversaw a period of significant growth and development at Blythe House. His leadership and commitment played a vital role in several key milestones, including:
- The opening of our charity shops in Chapel-en-le-Frith and Whaley Bridge
- Securing a £195,000 grant in 2004 to support the counselling and bereavement support service
- Receiving £182,700 from the Department of Health in 2007 to build an extension with therapy rooms and a new creative arts space
- Supporting the first of many successful Hallé Orchestra fundraising concerts at the Buxton Opera House in 2008
Tim Mourne, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, said: ‘We are truly saddened to hear of Nick’s death. He was a remarkable man who gave so much of his time, energy and heart to Blythe House Hospice. His dedication to improving services and raising the hospice’s profile in the community has left a lasting legacy.
‘Even after stepping down from the Board, Nick’s interest in the hospice never waned, and his continued support was a testament to the value he placed on the care we provide. He will be greatly missed.’
