Lynda Smith – Hospice shop and Fundraising volunteer

‘Volunteering, it does keep you young, it keeps you talking to people and getting out there.’

Lynda Smith’s volunteering started when COVID restrictions eased, and life started to return to some form of normality. She was passing the Bakewell store, and knowing the great work of the charity asked if they needed volunteers.

‘I filled an application in and sent it off, I think I came in for a morning- the rest was history! I now volunteer here one session a week, doing 4 hours to support such a wonderful cause.’

As donations arrive in the Bakewell store, they are sorted and priced, with the volunteers always keeping an eye out for anything that may be a little bit different. As specialist or higher valued items are sent to the eCommerce team at the Blythe House eCommerce depot. Here items are researched before being photographed and put up for sale online, ensuring they reach the widest possible audience, and they might be unique and specialised items, which are sold for a higher value.

‘I have just found some silk ties,’ explained Lynda when we caught up with her during a busy session at the store.
‘It is about keeping your eye out and if you are not sure we put it to one side for it to be checked before either going out in the store or to eCommerce.’

Lynda, from Darley Dale, has no doubt about the benefits of giving up a few hours each week to support the work of Blythe House Hospice, and would recommend volunteering to others who are thinking about getting involved.
‘Volunteering, it does keep you young, it keeps you talking to people and getting out there. I like being on the till and talking to people.

‘It gives me something to get up for in the morning for, it makes me feel good to know that I am making a difference.’ In addition to giving her time in support of the Bakewell shop, and the Bakewell Old House Museum, Lynda also supports the fundraising team at Blythe House Hospice.

‘I collect in the collection pots, that we have out in various shops, pubs, and businesses across the area. I look after those in the Matlock area for the hospice.’ The collection pots are an important way in which the public can support the work of the charity. ‘The pots in bars for example fill up quite quickly. I think often it depends on how busy somewhere is and also if people have cash. They often put their change in the pot to support the wonderful work of Blythe House Hospice.’

When not supporting the work of Blythe House Hospice, Lynda spends her time travelling to see her grandchildren who live in the Netherlands and in the south of England. In between visits she finds time to spend in her garden.
