A new short walking group in Chapel-en-le-Frith is hoping to support local patients to improve strength, balance and stamina.

The physical therapy team at Blythe House Hospicecare and Helen’s Trust is launching the brand-new weekly group at 11am on Tuesday 5th September.

It follows a successful pilot series earlier this year which has seen patients gain confidence with light physical activity, and continue to meet for social get-togethers long after the group finished.

Angela Salisbury, physiotherapist (right above), explained: ‘We decided to launch a new walking group as a way for local people who are living with a life-limiting illness to maintain or improve their fitness levels, and as a social opportunity for them to meet likeminded people, and gain advice and support.’

The group is aimed at people who are able to mobilise for 60 minutes in total steadily and with breaks, and are able to demonstrate good standing, mobility and balance tolerance with or without an aid, including scooters.

Miriam Haddock, occupational therapist (left above), added: ‘The group will be led by either myself or Angela, and one of the hospice’s wonderful volunteers. Participants will be assessed before being referred to the group, and they will be supported to set goals that we’ll work with them to reach throughout a six-week period.’
