‘My Thursday mornings at the shop are something I really look forward to. It feels like I’m still contributing in a meaningful way.’
Ann has been a valued volunteer at Blythe House Hospice’s Whaley Bridge shop since 2021, becoming a familiar and friendly face to customers and fellow volunteers alike.
With a varied career background spanning travel services and hospitality, including time as a receptionist at the well-known locally Moorside Hotel, Ann brings warmth, experience and a calm, welcoming presence to her role.
What began as a chance opportunity to get involved has grown into a regular commitment every Thursday morning, alongside supporting the shop whenever she can on an ad-hoc basis. In June 2026, Ann was recognised for her dedication with a five-year Helen Lyon Long Service Award at the hospice’s summer gathering.
Ann explained: ‘I started volunteering quite by chance, but I’m so glad I did. I quickly realised how much I enjoyed being part of the shop and the wider hospice team.
‘I worked in a travel agent for many years and then went on to work as a receptionist at the Moorside Hotel, so I’ve always enjoyed working with people. Volunteering gives me that same sense of connection. I get a lot out of it and have met some lovely people along the way.
‘Since retiring, it’s been good to have some structure to my week. My Thursday mornings at the shop are something I really look forward to. The shop is flexible; it’s good fun, and there’s always a laugh to be had. I also like being able to help out where I can beyond my usual shift – it feels like I’m still contributing in a meaningful way.’
